folio site now iphone enabled

I’ve finally got a chance to create a iPhone version of my portfolio site.

Since the majority of my work is creating flash driven content, I’ve always had concerns that one day humankind will disable their flash players and all new technologies/companies will stop supporting it. So far, that hasn’t happened yet. But Apple is pretty stingy when it comes to external plug-ins. The majority of the apple devices ( iPod Touch, iPhone, and the new iPad ) does not support the flash player. I can definitely see their point of view, but it just seems wrong to block users from all the coolness that’s already out there on the web. I would even be on board with some type of quality assurance process that checks and makes sure content is non-obtrusive and safe. This would be just like the app store, but for the flash player or any other plug-ins. Just my two cents.

So anyway, the iPhone version is now up and running (www.calvinly.com). If you run into any issue or have any suggestions on improving it, I’m all ears.

FITC Mobile 2009

I’m looking forward to attending the FITC Mobile Conference in Toronto from September 12-14. I’ve tinkered around with the iPhone SDK and read up on Android a bit, but I’ve yet to create a fully working app. I’m taking both the iPhone and Android Development pre-conference workshops. The cool part about the iPhone workshop is that it targets flash developers, which is a good thing, because I don’t have any experience with Objective C. Hopefully, this will get my feet wet, and I’ll have a better understanding of the mobile world.

Another thing I’m looking forward to on the trip is the Toronto International Film Festival which is being held the same week. I’m hoping I’ll be to catch a couple of movies while I’m there. I’ll also need to brush up on my Chinese as well.

Fall Leaves Animations

After coming back from my trip to NYC a couple of weeks ago, I really wanted to create some kind of project to reflect my experience there. I went through all my photos, and found out that central park and the fall colors is what really interested me the most. Fall is my favorite season, and I always love watching the colors of the leaves change and hit its peak. But also watching it fall and reach its inevitable decline is fascinating as well.

So, I wanted to create an environment that showed the process and the life of a leaf. As I was experimenting with some effects in After Effects, I stumbled across a cool effect that could be produced with a single leaf. So I started playing around with more settings and came out with some unexpected results. The final piece is still in progress, but I thought I’d share some pieces of the process.

Leaves Animation #1 – first experiment

Leaves Animation #2 – changing different parameters of #1

Leaves Animation #3 – just going crazy here

Leaves Animation #4 – took everything I learned from the previous three and build an opening and closing sequence

If you’re interested in a more detailed explanation on achieving this in After Effects, just email me.

Wired NextFest Photos+Video

This is a late post, but I finally got a chance to post pictures and some videos from Wired NextFest. Without a doubt, the coolest most advanced technology I’ve ever seen in my life. From intelligent robots, to doors that can open to the shape of your body, to games that tests your stress/relaxation levels.

Click here to view all the photos. Below are some video that I captured. The quality is not that great, but hopefully, you get the idea.

Wired NextFest Conference (Sept. 13-16)

Wired NextFest Conference logo

Just recently purchased my tickets, flight, and hotel and am counting the days till Wired NextFest starts! It’s my first Wired conference, which runs through Sept. 13-16 at the LA Convention Center. It’ll be interested to test out all the latest technology and be able to see it action before it hits the store shelves. The tickets are very affordable ($20), and it’s in Los Angeles. What more could you ask for!
